What is an unvented hot water cylinder?

An Unvented Hot Water Cylinder is fed with cold water directly from the cold mains and therefore once heated can deliver hot water at mains pressure.

Unvented Hot Water Cylinder Features

Gravity-fed

This is great for improving the performance of gravity-fed showers and baths.

Safety controls

The tank itself is supplied with additional controls to safely dealing with pressurised hot water

Approved accredited installers

Only approved accredited installers are allowed to install these tanks which then are registered with Gas Safe

hot water cylinder
Insulated & efficient

Very well insulated and their recovery rate is swift making them very efficient

Mains pressure dependent

The better your mains water pressure and flow rate on your incoming mains water supply the better these tanks perform.

Electric immersion or Boiler

These tanks can be heated by both electric immersion heater or indirectly from a boiler of any fuel.

Why consider an unvented hot water cylinder?

Improving Performance

This is great for improving the performance of gravity-fed showers and baths. A word of caution though, the pressure and flow rate at your taps will only be as good as the incoming mains water pressure to the property (in other words the tank doesn’t improve the pressure or flow rate).

Additional controls

Nevertheless, the performance is normally vastly improved compared to gravity-fed systems. The tank itself is supplied with additional controls and the sole purpose is for safely dealing with the pressurised hot water such as pressure reducing valve, discharge valves and pipework.

Gas Safe registered

This is all taken care of by the installer and is why only approved accredited installers are allowed to install these tanks and on installation, the tank has to be registered by the installer with Gas Safe.

Unvented hot water cylinder specifications

VERY WELL INSULATED

The tanks are very well insulated and their recovery rate is swift making them very efficient. Not only this, they save space (no cold water storage tank) with no requirement for expensive and noisy pumps to boost the flow and pressure. Also, no water is sitting around in open tanks in your loft just waiting for dirt and contamination. All your water is direct from the clean mains supply.

PRESSURE AND FLOW RATE

The better your mains water pressure and flow rate on your incoming mains water supply the better these tanks perform. For example, when two or more taps are used consecutively the pressure and flow rate of both taps will reduce to half the incoming mains pressure on each tap. If you have very good mains water pressure this fluctuation will be far less noticeable than if your pressure/flow rate is poor.

PLUMBING CONDITION

Another consideration is the condition/age of your existing plumbing. For example, old taps, showers, ball valves even pipes which are currently under gravity pressure could leak/let bye when exposed to the increased pressure from the mains water. However, this is only likely to cause a tap to drip or a ball valve to let bye and normally nothing more serious than that. These problems can easily be fixed by replacement of these components but nevertheless, it’s wise to be aware of these potential issues before proceeding.

ELECTRIC OR FUEL

These tanks can be heated by both electric immersion heater or indirectly from a boiler of any fuel. The tanks come supplied with good quality immersion heaters so if you already have an immersion electric point they are ready to go. Obviously electric isn’t as efficient as for example gas.

MINIMUM WATER PRESSURE

In short, we at Mulgas would only recommend the use of unvented hot water tanks when you have flow rates of 20 litres/min and pressure of 1.5 bar as a minimum. Although we would also encourage you to seek the advice from the individual manufacturer’s of your chosen tank. Also if your pressure and flow rate are below the requirements this doesn’t need to be the end of the road as extra equipment to overcome this is available such as accumulators and booster pumps, space and cost permitting.

TESTIMONIALS

Our customers have been recommending us to others since 1998. You may not have heard of us before – we do very little advertising – yet each year we install and maintain literally thousands of heating systems for local people just like you.
